South Korean actress with an Academy Award for "Minari", the first Korean performer to win Best Supporting Actress, with a career spanning six decades.
Background
Born in Kaesong, then Korea, Youn moved to Seoul as a child after the Korean War. She trained at the Hanyang University Theatre Film Department and began her career on Korean television in 1966.
Career
She worked with the auteur Kim Ki-young on “Woman of Fire” (1971) and others. After a decades-long stay in the US during the 1970s and 80s she returned to Korean cinema and made a long collaboration with director Im Sang-soo.
Style
Youn is recognized in Korea for her plain-spoken interview style and for choosing scripts that center older women. Her 2021 acceptance speech at the Oscars, charmingly noting Brad Pitt’s role as producer of “Minari”, went viral worldwide.
