Background
Born Margaret Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, she trained in ballet at the June Roper Dance School. She moved to Hollywood as a teenager with her mother in 1939.
Career
After several years in B-pictures she broke through opposite Charles Bickford in “Salome, Where She Danced” (1945). Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Sephora in “The Ten Commandments” (1956); CBS’s “The Munsters” (1964-1966) made her a household name.
Style
De Carlo was admired for her long, dark hair and exotic image during the 1940s and 50s, when many of her roles were Middle Eastern or Mediterranean characters. She originated the role of Carlotta Campion in Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies” on Broadway in 1971.
