Background

Born in Kapsisiywa, Kenya, Kipchoge first reached the senior international level on the track, winning the 5,000m at the 2003 World Championships at age 18.

Career

He moved to the marathon in 2013 and went on to win at Berlin, London, Chicago, and the Olympics. In October 2019 at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, he ran 1:59:40, becoming the first person to break two hours, though not under standard race conditions.
