Born Manuel Francisco dos Santos in Pau Grande, Brazil, Garrincha was born with leg deformities but rose through Botafogo to become one of Brazil’s most popular players.

Career

He played most of his career at Botafogo, winning three state titles. With Brazil he was part of the 1958 World Cup-winning squad and was the standout player at the 1962 tournament after Pele was injured early.

Style of play

A right winger, Garrincha was known for sudden changes of direction and feinting past defenders before crossing or shooting. His dribbling, despite asymmetric legs, made him one of the most distinctive players of his era.
