Background

Born in Ashington, Northumberland, Charlton joined Manchester United as a youth in 1953 and survived the 1958 Munich air disaster that killed eight teammates.

Career

He played 17 seasons at Manchester United, scoring 249 goals, and captained the club to the 1968 European Cup. For England he scored 49 goals in 106 caps and was a key player in the 1966 World Cup victory on home soil.

A deep-lying midfielder with powerful long-range shooting from both feet, Charlton combined accurate passing with the ability to drive into the box and score from distance.
