American basketball center who won 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics, the most of any player in league history.
Background
Born in Monroe, Louisiana, Russell played college basketball at the University of San Francisco, winning consecutive NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956 before joining the Boston Celtics.
Career
He spent his entire 13-year NBA career with the Celtics, winning 11 titles. He served as player-coach for his last three seasons, leading Boston to championships in 1968 and 1969 in that dual role.
Style of play
A 6’10” center, Russell was known for shot-blocking, rebounding, and defensive anchoring rather than scoring. His Celtics teams built their dynasty around team defense.
