The world's most popular team sport — an eleven-a-side ball game played on a rectangular pitch with two goals.
Origin and rules
Modern football traces to 1863 when the English Football Association codified the rules. Two teams of eleven players try to put a ball into the opposing goal without using their hands, except the goalkeeper inside the box.
How it plays
Matches last 90 minutes, split into two halves of 45 minutes each, with stoppage time added by the referee. Goals are worth one point; the team with more goals wins. Tied matches in knockout play go to extra time, then penalties.
Competition
The FIFA World Cup, held every four years, is the sport’s premier tournament. Club football is led by the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. Football debuted at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
