Korfball

Filter:

A mixed-gender team sport similar to basketball played with two posts and emphasising teamwork over individual scoring.

Origin and rules

Korfball was invented in 1902 by Dutch teacher Nico Broekhuysen as a mixed-gender team sport. Two teams of four men and four women try to score by throwing a ball through a tall basketless post called a korf.

How it plays

The court is divided into two zones. Each team has four players in attack and four in defence, switching after every two goals. Players cannot dribble, run with the ball, or shoot when closely defended.

Competition

The IKF Korfball World Championship is held every four years. The sport is strongest in the Netherlands and Belgium. Although demonstrated at the Olympics in 1920 and 1928, korfball is not currently an Olympic sport.
