A two-on-two outdoor variant of volleyball played on sand under stripped-down rules.
Origin and rules
Beach volleyball emerged in Santa Monica, California, in the 1920s. Two-player teams face off across a net on a sand court smaller than the indoor version, with no positional rotation or substitutions.
How it plays
Each side gets three touches per possession. Sets are played to 21 points, won by two; matches are best of three. Players must read the wind and sand carefully, and ball-handling rules are stricter than indoors.
Competition
The FIVB Beach Pro Tour is the leading professional circuit, with major stops worldwide. Brazil and the United States have produced many of the top pairs. Beach volleyball became an Olympic sport at Atlanta 1996.
