A high-speed racquet sport played with a feathered shuttlecock that must clear a high net without touching the ground.
Origin and rules
Modern badminton was codified in 1873 at Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England, drawing on an older Indian game called Poona. Players hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth over a tall net using lightweight racquets.
How it plays
Games are played to 21 points, won by two, with a deciding game played to 21 capped at 30. Matches are best of three games. The shuttlecock decelerates rapidly, demanding precise placement and explosive movement.
Competition
The BWF World Championships, the Thomas and Uber Cups, and the All England Open headline the calendar. China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Denmark, and Japan are powerhouses. Badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992.
