Gaelic Football

Filter:

An Irish team sport blending elements of soccer and rugby, played with a round ball on a large pitch.

Origin and rules

Gaelic football was codified by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887 to formalise traditional Irish football games. Two teams of fifteen play on a rectangular pitch, advancing the ball by hand and foot.

How it plays

Matches last 70 minutes in two halves. A goal kicked or punched into the net scores three points; a ball over the crossbar scores one. Players may bounce or solo the ball but must release it every four steps.

Competition

The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, organised at county level, is the sport’s flagship event, played at Croke Park in Dublin. The GAA remains amateur. Gaelic football is most popular in Ireland and among the Irish diaspora.
