Field Hockey

Filter:

A team stick sport played on grass or turf where players strike a small ball into a goal.

Origin and rules

Modern field hockey took shape in 19th-century England, with the first formal club founded in 1849. Two teams of eleven use hooked sticks to drive a hard ball into the opposing goal, played on grass or artificial turf.

How it plays

Matches run four 15-minute quarters. Only the flat side of the stick may strike the ball. Goals are scored from inside the shooting circle, and play features penalty corners and short corners when the defence concedes inside the circle.

Competition

The FIH Hockey World Cup, the Hockey Pro League, and the Olympic tournament headline the sport. India, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, and Belgium are top nations. Field hockey has been Olympic since 1908.
