Cricket

Filter:

A bat-and-ball team sport played on a circular field with a central pitch where bowlers deliver to batters defending wickets.

Origin and rules

Cricket dates to 16th-century England and was first codified in 1744. Two teams of eleven take turns batting and bowling on a 22-yard pitch with three stumps at each end. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball and running between wickets.

How it plays

Formats range from five-day Test matches to one-day internationals of 50 overs per side and the three-hour Twenty20 game. Batters can be dismissed by being bowled, caught, run out, or leg before wicket.

Competition

The ICC Cricket World Cup, the T20 World Cup, and the World Test Championship are the top international events. The Indian Premier League is the richest domestic competition. Cricket returns to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028.
