Canoeing

Filter:

A paddle sport in which athletes propel an open canoe with a single-bladed paddle on flatwater sprint or whitewater courses.

Origin and rules

Modern canoeing traces to Indigenous North American watercraft adapted by Europeans into a recreational and competitive sport. Athletes kneel or sit in an open canoe and propel themselves with a single-bladed paddle.

How it plays

Olympic events include sprint races over 200 and 1000 metres in still water, and slalom on a whitewater course with hanging gates. Athletes must complete the course without touching gates or missing required upstream sequences.

Competition

The ICF Canoe Sprint and Canoe Slalom World Championships and the Olympic tournament headline the calendar. Hungary, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, and Canada have rich canoeing traditions. Canoeing has been Olympic since 1936.
