Curling

Filter:

A winter Olympic team sport in which players slide heavy granite stones down a sheet of ice toward a circular target.

Origin and rules

Curling originated in medieval Scotland, with stones found dating to 1511. The first formal club was founded in 1716. Two teams of four players take turns sliding 19.96-kilogram granite stones toward a target called the house.

How it plays

A match consists of eight or ten ends. Each end, each team slides eight stones in alternation. Only the team with stones closest to the centre scores. Players sweep the ice in front of moving stones to alter speed and curl.

Competition

The World Curling Federation runs annual world championships in men’s, women’s, mixed doubles, and mixed events. Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland, and Norway are perennial powers. Curling has been Olympic since Nagano 1998.
