Hurling

Filter:

An ancient Irish team stick sport in which players strike a small ball with a wooden hurley at high speed.

Origin and rules

Hurling is among the oldest field sports in the world, with references dating back over 3000 years in Irish mythology. The Gaelic Athletic Association codified rules in 1884. Players use a wooden hurley to strike a sliotar.

How it plays

Matches run 70 minutes in two halves. Striking the ball into the net scores three points; over the bar, one. Players may catch the sliotar in the hand but can only carry it for four steps before passing or balancing it on the hurley.

Competition

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship and its provincial counterparts run each summer, with the final at Croke Park. The sport is concentrated in Kilkenny, Cork, Tipperary, Limerick, and Galway. Hurling remains an amateur game.
