Lacrosse

Filter:

A team stick sport in which players use netted sticks to catch, carry, and shoot a small rubber ball into a goal.

Origin and rules

Lacrosse originated with Indigenous peoples of North America, especially the Haudenosaunee, and was adapted into a codified sport in 19th-century Canada. Players carry a ball in the mesh head of a long stick, trying to shoot it past a goalkeeper.

How it plays

Field lacrosse is played ten-a-side over four quarters. Box lacrosse, popular indoors in Canada, uses six players a side. Players may use their stick or body to dislodge the ball from an opponent within the rules.

Competition

The Premier Lacrosse League and the National Lacrosse League lead the professional game in North America. The World Lacrosse Championship is the top international event. Lacrosse returns to the Olympic programme at Los Angeles 2028.
