A combat sport between two fighters who wear gloves and exchange punches in a roped ring over timed rounds.
Origin and rules
Modern boxing was codified by the Marquess of Queensberry Rules in 1867, requiring padded gloves, three-minute rounds, and a ten-second count. Two fighters of comparable weight try to strike each other with their gloved fists while defending themselves.
How it plays
Amateur bouts run three rounds; professional bouts up to twelve. Fighters score by landing punches above the belt with the knuckle area of the glove. A knockout, technical knockout, or judges’ decision determines the winner.
Competition
Professional boxing is run by sanctioning bodies including the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO. The Olympic tournament is the top amateur event. Boxing has been on the modern Olympic programme since 1904.
