A grappling combat sport emphasising ground control, joint locks, and chokes that allow a smaller fighter to defeat a larger one.
Origin and rules
Brazilian jiu-jitsu was developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil, adapting Kodokan judo for ground fighting. Two athletes grapple on a mat, seeking advantageous positions and finishing holds.
How it plays
Matches are won by submission via joint locks or chokeholds, or on points if neither competitor submits. Points reward takedowns, sweeps, passes, mounts, and back control. Time limits range from five to ten minutes depending on rank.
Competition
The IBJJF World Championships and the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship are top events. Brazil and the United States lead the sport, with growing strength from Russia, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Asia.
