Bobsleigh

Filter:

A winter Olympic sport in which teams pilot a streamlined sled down a refrigerated ice track at high speed.

Origin and rules

Bobsleigh emerged in late 19th-century St. Moritz, Switzerland, when winter tourists adapted toboggans for icy mountain runs. Teams of two or four push the sled at the start, then leap in to ride down the banked track.

How it plays

Olympic events include two-person and four-person bobsleigh and a monobob for women. Teams complete four runs on the same track over two days, with the lowest combined time winning. Speeds can exceed 150 kilometres per hour.

Competition

The IBSF World Cup and World Championships run each winter. The Winter Olympics is the marquee event. Germany has long dominated, with the United States, Canada, Switzerland, and Latvia also strong. Bobsleigh has been Olympic since 1924.
