A stand-up combat sport blending boxing punches with karate-style kicks under various rule sets.
Origin and rules
Kickboxing emerged in 1960s Japan as fighters blended Western boxing with karate striking. American kickboxing developed in parallel in the 1970s. Fighters trade punches and kicks above the waist in a roped ring.
How it plays
Bouts run three to five rounds depending on the rule set. K-1, Glory, and oriental rules vary in what techniques are allowed, including knees and limited clinch work. Bouts end by knockout, technical knockout, or judges’ decision.
Competition
Glory Kickboxing, ONE Championship, and the K-1 World Grand Prix lead the professional ranks. WAKO organises amateur world championships. Kickboxing is recognised by the IOC and has been included in the World Games.
