Born in Asella, Ethiopia, Gebrselassie grew up running to school and broke onto the international scene at the 1992 World Junior Championships.
Career
He won 10,000m golds at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 and set world records in distances from 1,500m to the marathon. His 2008 Berlin Marathon time of 2:03:59 was a world best at the time. He retired in 2015.
