Background

Born in West Baden Springs, Indiana, Bird played college basketball at Indiana State, leading the team to the 1979 NCAA final against Magic Johnson’s Michigan State.

Career

He spent all 13 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning titles in 1981, 1984, and 1986. He also coached the Indiana Pacers from 1997 to 2000, taking the team to the 2000 NBA Finals.

Style of play

A 6’9” small forward, Bird was known for shooting, court vision, and high basketball IQ rather than athleticism. He won three consecutive Three-Point Contests at All-Star Weekend from 1986 to 1988.
