Born in Shanghai to two former Chinese national team basketball players, Yao began his career with the Shanghai Sharks before being drafted first overall by the Houston Rockets in 2002.
Career
He spent his entire NBA career with the Rockets, playing eight seasons before injuries forced his retirement in 2011. He captained China at three Olympics, including the 2008 Games in Beijing.
Style of play
A 7’6” center, Yao combined size with soft shooting touch and passing ability, making him an unusual low-post option. Recurring foot and ankle injuries limited his on-court time.
