The broad flat upper portion of the ilium that flares outward to form the side of the pelvis.
Structure
The iliac wing has an inner concave surface called the iliac fossa and an outer convex surface marked by gluteal lines. The crest along its upper edge is easily palpable through the skin.
Function
The iliacus muscle fills the iliac fossa and helps flex the hip. The gluteal muscles arise from the outer surface and power hip extension and abduction.
Clinical note
The iliac wing’s curved surface is a frequent site for placing pelvic screws in trauma surgery and for harvesting cancellous bone grafts.
