A flat, chisel-shaped tooth at the front of the mouth used for biting and cutting food.
Structure
Each incisor has a single root and a sharp, chisel-like crown with a thin cutting edge. The two central incisors are larger and broader than the lateral incisors beside them.
Function
Incisors do the first work in eating, biting through bread, fruit, and other foods. They also contribute to speech sounds that involve the tongue contacting the upper front teeth.
Development
The deciduous incisors appear in infancy and are replaced by the permanent set between roughly six and nine years of age.
