The lower and posterior portion of the hip bone, supporting body weight during sitting.
Structure
The ischium has a body that contributes to the hip socket, a ramus that joins the pubic bone, and a stout ischial tuberosity at the back where it meets the chair when seated.
Function
The ischial tuberosity is the origin of the hamstring muscles. The ischial spine projects into the pelvis and provides attachment for the sacrospinous ligament.
Clinical note
Prolonged sitting can compress soft tissue against the ischial tuberosity, producing pressure ulcers in immobilized patients.
