The largest internal organ, performing hundreds of metabolic, storage, and detoxification functions.
Structure
The liver is divided into two main lobes, the larger right and smaller left, plus the caudate and quadrate lobes. It weighs roughly 1.5 kilograms and is organized into hexagonal lobules built around central veins.
Blood supply
About 75 percent of incoming blood arrives through the hepatic portal vein from the digestive tract, carrying absorbed nutrients. The hepatic artery delivers the remaining oxygen-rich blood from the aorta.
Function
Hepatocytes synthesize albumin and clotting factors, convert ammonia into urea, store glycogen, regulate blood glucose, and produce roughly 800 to 1000 milliliters of bile per day.
