The narrow region between the head and the trunk, containing major vessels, nerves, and the airway.
Structure
The neck is divided into anterior and posterior triangles by the sternocleidomastoid muscle. It contains the cervical vertebrae, trachea, esophagus, carotid arteries, jugular veins, and several cranial and spinal nerves.
Function
Strong cervical muscles support the head’s weight and allow rotation, flexion, and tilting. The structures inside the neck deliver air, food, blood, and nerve signals between the head and the trunk.
Clinical note
Neck pain is among the most common musculoskeletal complaints, and stiffness with fever can be a clue to meningitis.
