The blood-cell-producing tissue inside many bones, where new red cells, white cells, and platelets are made throughout life.

Structure

Red marrow contains a meshwork of reticular fibers and sinusoidal capillaries, packed with hematopoietic stem cells at various stages of maturation.

Function

Stem cells in the marrow divide and differentiate to produce roughly two million new red blood cells every second in a healthy adult, along with neutrophils, platelets, and lymphocyte precursors.

Clinical note

A red marrow biopsy from the iliac crest is the standard test for evaluating unexplained anemia, leukemia, and other blood disorders.
