Scapula

Scapula

Filter:

The shoulder blade, a flat triangular bone that connects the humerus to the clavicle and supports shoulder motion.

Structure

The scapula has a triangular body, a spine that runs across its posterior surface, and the acromion that overhangs the shoulder joint. The glenoid cavity at its lateral angle receives the head of the humerus.

Function

The scapula glides over the back of the rib cage during arm movement, allowing the shoulder a wider range of motion than the glenohumeral joint alone could provide. This combined motion is called scapulohumeral rhythm.

Muscles

Seventeen muscles attach to the scapula, including the trapezius, rhomboids, levator scapulae, serratus anterior, and the four rotator cuff muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint.
