The collarbone, a horizontal S-shaped bone connecting the arm to the rest of the skeleton.
Structure
The clavicle is roughly 15 centimeters long with a medial end that articulates with the sternum and a lateral end that meets the scapula at the acromioclavicular joint. Its double curve gives it strength while allowing flexibility in shoulder motion.
Function
By holding the shoulder away from the chest, the clavicle gives the arm a wide range of motion. It also helps protect underlying neurovascular structures including the brachial plexus and subclavian vessels.
Attachments
Muscles including the pectoralis major, deltoid, trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid attach to its surfaces. It is one of the most frequently fractured bones in the body, especially from falls onto an outstretched hand.
