The long bone of the upper arm, extending from the shoulder to the elbow.
Structure
The humerus has a rounded head that fits the glenoid cavity, a narrow neck, and a long shaft. At its distal end the capitulum articulates with the radius and the trochlea with the ulna.
Landmarks
The greater and lesser tubercles serve as muscle attachment sites near the head. The deltoid tuberosity on the lateral shaft anchors the deltoid muscle.
Nerves
The radial nerve spirals around the back of the shaft in the radial groove. The axillary, median, and ulnar nerves also pass close to the bone, making mid-shaft fractures clinically significant.
