Origins
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo. The app started as a status-sharing service and pivoted to messaging when Apple added push notifications.
Products
WhatsApp lets users send text messages, voice messages, photos, videos, and documents, and make voice and video calls. WhatsApp Business is a separate app aimed at small businesses, and WhatsApp Status displays disappearing updates.
