Carpet Python

Morelia spilota

Filter:

A widely variable Australasian python with bold geometric patterns, comfortable in trees, rocks, and even suburban roofs.

Description

Carpet pythons are medium-sized constrictors usually 2 to 3 m long, marked with intricate cream, brown, and black patterns that vary dramatically across regions. The triangular head bears heat-sensing pits along the lips that help locate warm-blooded prey at night.

Behavior

Mostly nocturnal, carpet pythons climb trees and roof spaces in search of possums, rats, and roosting birds. They are commonly found in suburban gardens of eastern Australia, where they are valued for controlling rodents. Several distinct subspecies are popular in the pet trade.

Range

Distributed across most of mainland Australia except the arid interior, plus southern New Guinea and a few nearby islands. Recognised subspecies include the jungle, coastal, Murray-Darling, and Irian Jaya forms.
