A handsome orange-and-red North American rat snake long popular in herpetoculture as a beginner-friendly pet.
Description
The corn snake is a slim, brightly coloured colubrid usually around 1.2 m, marked with bold reddish-orange saddles outlined in black on a tan to orange background. The belly bears a checkerboard pattern reminiscent of corn kernels — one suggested origin of the name.
Behavior
A docile constrictor active mostly at dawn and dusk, the corn snake hunts rodents in old fields and farm buildings, then digests in burrows or attics. Because it tames easily, eats readily in captivity, and has been bred into dozens of colour morphs, it is one of the most widely kept pet snakes.
Range
Native to the southeastern United States from southern New Jersey to the Florida Keys and west through the Gulf coast states into Louisiana. Escaped pets have established small populations on several Caribbean islands.
