Reticulated Python

Malayopython reticulatus

Filter:

The longest snake species in the world, a slender Southeast Asian giant with a complex network-like geometric pattern.

Description

The reticulated python is a long, slim python with a body usually 4 to 6 m long but capable of exceeding 7 m, with a head almost flat above and a back patterned in tan, brown, black, and yellow lines forming a complex netlike geometry. Iridescent scales shimmer in sunlight.

Behavior

Highly adaptable, the reticulated python hunts mammals and birds by ambush along forest streams and even in city outskirts. It constricts large prey such as pigs, monkeys, and rarely humans. Females coil around clutches of up to 100 eggs and shiver to incubate them.

Range

Native to South and Southeast Asia from Bangladesh and the Nicobar Islands through mainland Southeast Asia to Indonesia and the Philippines. The species is heavily collected for the skin trade but remains widespread across its range.
