Rough Green Snake

Opheodrys aestivus

Filter:

A slim emerald-green arboreal colubrid of the eastern United States that hunts caterpillars and spiders in low foliage.

Description

The rough green snake is a slim, vivid leaf-green colubrid usually under a metre long, with a pale yellow belly and keeled scales that give the back a slightly rough texture. The species is so cryptic against living foliage that it is often only noticed when it moves.

Behavior

A docile diurnal hunter, the rough green snake moves slowly through low shrubs in search of insects and spiders, taking caterpillars almost as often as anything else. It rarely bites and is so gentle that overhandling stresses it severely, making it a poor pet despite its beauty.

Range

Distributed across the southeastern United States from southern New Jersey to Florida and west to central Texas, with a few populations in northeastern Mexico. Habitat loss in riparian thickets has reduced numbers in many states.
