He played Jackie Robinson in “42,” James Brown in “Get on Up,” and Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall.” Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” cast him as T’Challa, a role he reprised across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His final lead role as Levee in George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was released after his death from colon cancer in 2020.
