Background
Born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, New York, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, he served in the United States Navy in the Second World War before training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Career
He broke through opposite Robert Mitchum in “Out of the Past” and earned three Best Actor nominations for “Champion,” “The Bad and the Beautiful,” and “Lust for Life.” He produced Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory” and “Spartacus” through his Bryna Productions and famously credited blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo on the latter.
Style
