Background
Born Michel Demitri Chalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt, into a Melkite Greek Catholic family of Lebanese descent, he studied at Victoria College in Alexandria and Cairo University.
Career
He starred in Egyptian films through the 1950s before David Lean cast him as Sherif Ali in “Lawrence of Arabia,” earning an Oscar nomination and the Golden Globe. He played Yuri Zhivago in Lean’s “Doctor Zhivago” and Nicky Arnstein opposite Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl.” Later in life he returned to French and Egyptian cinema, winning the Cesar for “Monsieur Ibrahim.”
Style
Sharif moved fluently between Arabic, French, and English-language films and remained known internationally for romantic leading roles in mid-century epics.
