Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. in Santa Monica, California, he attended the University of Colorado and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York before stage work on Broadway.

Career

He starred opposite Paul Newman in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting” and led “All the President’s Men” as Bob Woodward. He directed and won Best Director for “Ordinary People.” He founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 and the Sundance Film Festival from the older Utah/US Film Festival, supporting American independent filmmaking for four decades.
