Japanese actor regarded as one of the foremost stars of post-war cinema, lead of sixteen films directed by Akira Kurosawa.

Background

Born in Tsingtao, China, to Japanese parents, Mifune served in the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service in the Second World War and was first cast in 1947 after applying to be a cameraman at Toho Studios.

Career

He played the bandit Tajomaru in Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon,” the masterless samurai in “Seven Samurai,” “Yojimbo,” and “Sanjuro,” and the doctor Niide in “Red Beard,” for which he was twice awarded the Volpi Cup. He also worked on international productions including John Frankenheimer’s “Grand Prix” and Steven Spielberg’s “1941.”

Style

Mifune brought volatile physical energy to samurai and modern dramatic roles and remains the leading international face of post-war Japanese cinema.
