Background
Born Yuliy Borisovich Briner in Vladivostok, Russia, to a Swiss-Mongolian father and a Russian mother, he grew up in Manchuria and Paris before settling in the United States.
Career
He originated the role of King Mongkut of Siam in the Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” in 1951 and won an Academy Award for the 1956 film version. He led John Sturges’s “The Magnificent Seven” as Chris Adams, Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” as Rameses II, and the Michael Crichton sci-fi film “Westworld” as the Gunslinger.
