British actress and politician with two Academy Awards for Best Actress, who later served 23 years as a Labour Party Member of Parliament.
Background
Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, to a bricklayer father and cleaner mother, Jackson trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964.
Career
Ken Russell’s “Women in Love” (1969) and “The Music Lovers” (1971) brought her global film success. After leaving acting in 1992 she served as Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate until 2015, then returned to the stage.
Style
Jackson refused to attend her own Oscar ceremonies and was famously brusque in interviews. She won a Tony at age 81 for “Three Tall Women” (2018), becoming one of few performers to win Oscar, Emmy, and Tony.
