Swedish actress considered one of the greatest stars of Hollywood's silent and early sound eras, famous for her enigmatic screen presence and 1941 retirement at age 35.
Background
Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Garbo trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre’s drama school. Director Mauritz Stiller mentored her and brought her to MGM in Hollywood in 1925.
Career
She became MGM’s biggest box-office star of the late 1920s, transitioning successfully to sound films with “Anna Christie” (1930). After “Two-Faced Woman” (1941) flopped, she retired and never made another film.
Style
Garbo was famous for the line “I want to be alone” — actually from “Grand Hotel” — and for fierce privacy in retirement. She lived quietly in New York until her death in 1990 and won an Honorary Academy Award in absentia in 1955.
