Background

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles, she spent her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage. She married at 16 and worked in a defense plant, where a photographer discovered her in 1944.

Career

After signing with Twentieth Century-Fox in 1946, she appeared as a featured player through the late 1940s. The leading roles in “Niagara”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, and “How to Marry a Millionaire” (all 1953) made her one of the world’s most famous performers.

Style

Monroe trained with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in pursuit of dramatic roles. She founded Marilyn Monroe Productions in 1954 — one of the first actor-led companies. She died in August 1962 at age 36.
