A 1959 American comedy about two Chicago musicians who witness a mob killing and flee disguised as women in a touring all-female band.
Production
Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond wrote the screenplay loosely based on a 1935 French film. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon played the disguised musicians, with Marilyn Monroe as the band’s singer Sugar Kane. Wilder shot in black and white partly to make the men’s makeup work on screen.
Reception
The film opened in March 1959 and earned around $25 million domestically against a $3 million budget. It received six Oscar nominations and won for costume design.
Legacy
The American Film Institute named it the greatest American comedy. The film’s closing line — “Well, nobody’s perfect” — is among the most-cited endings in cinema.
