Production

George Lucas wrote and directed the film for 20th Century Fox on a $11 million budget. The visual-effects house Industrial Light and Magic was built from scratch to execute the film’s spaceship miniatures and motion-control photography. Later marketing recast the film as Episode IV: A New Hope.

Reception

The film opened on 32 screens in May 1977, expanded gradually, and earned around $775 million on initial worldwide release. It won six Academy Awards from ten nominations.

Legacy

Star Wars relaunched the science-fiction blockbuster, transformed merchandising as a revenue stream, and seeded a franchise that now spans 11 theatrical films and multiple streaming series.
