Saving Private Ryan

Filter:

A 1998 American war film following an Army Ranger unit ordered to find and bring home a paratrooper whose three brothers have been killed in action.

Production

Steven Spielberg directed for DreamWorks and Paramount on a $70 million budget, shooting the Normandy landing across four weeks at Curracloe Beach in Ireland. Tom Hanks led an ensemble that included Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, and Vin Diesel. Cinematographer Janusz Kamiński stripped coating from his lenses to produce the film’s bleached combat look.

Reception

The film opened in July 1998 and earned around $482 million worldwide. It won five Academy Awards from 11 nominations and is often referenced as the most influential Best Picture loss of the late 1990s.

Legacy

The opening 27-minute Omaha Beach sequence prompted spikes in calls to veteran support hotlines and reshaped the technical conventions of combat filmmaking. The handheld camera work has been a war-genre standard since.
